The Drafting Program is designed to prepare students for employment in a variety of drafting fields or to prepare students to continue their education in baccalaureate programs. Drafting is the art of documenting products or projects so well the manufacture or construction phase has every bit of information they need to succeed. Drafting is integral to DESIGN. Proper design is accomplished by individuals that understand their product or process, working as a team. The drafter is charged with documenting and listing detailed information from the team about the project. Many drafters quickly work into a designer/drafter role as they gain experience in their chosen career.
During your work in this program, you will learn to use very specific viewing techniques to create views of objects, actual or imagined. Additionally, you will learn how to combine these views and detail them with all the necessary information to create said object. This is the essence of drafting and the beginning of all manufacturing and construction. You will learn the accepted drawing standards from industry and groups like ANSI, ASME, and ISO.
The Drafting Program at LSCPA is a fully accredited Associate of Applied Science by the state of Texas and is fully transferable to any college. Many universities have Bachelor programs designed to integrate with your drafting degree to increase your career value with other skills like management and specific industry applications.
During your work in this program, you will create 2D drawings and 3D models. You will use these to create technically correct drawings and print them. Additionally, you will print 3D CAD models on various 3D printer systems, currently filament and SLA printing. All of this is learned in your FIRST SEMSETER!!! As you progress through the program, you will learn more about drafting in specific industries and manufacturing processes. You will design houses and mechanical devices and piping systems. Your projects will get more complex as you build an impressive portfolio to show prospective employers.
Students with a Drafting major must earn a minimum grade of ‘C’ in all technical courses in the Recommended Program of Study.
