Admission to Selective Programs

Students interested in programs including the Vocational Nursing Program, Upward Mobility LVN to ADN Program, and the Surgical Technology Program must apply to the specific program. Interested students must 1) complete an Application for Admission to an Allied Health program; 2) submit required official transcripts; 3) submit program required test scores; and 4) submit other documents on specific dates (see program statement). All Allied Health students must complete a background check, either before acceptance in the program or before registering for the course that includes a clinical rotation or practicum. Students accepted into the Vocational Nursing Program, Upward Mobility LVN to ADN Program, and the Surgical Technology Program require a mandatory drug screening prior to admission into the program. Students accepted into the Pharmacy Technician Program will be required to complete a mandatory drug screening prior to the first clinical course. Students in other Allied Health programs may be required to complete a drug screening dependent upon where their clinical rotation is completed.

Students will not be considered for admissions if they do not complete specific program application procedures. Applicants must be exempt from the TSIA Assessment or pass all sections of the TSIA Assessment or an approved test to be admitted to a Level 2 Certificate or Associate Degree program.

Applicants are urged to follow application instructions carefully to ensure processing by program admission committees. Enrollment is based on availability of clinical sites and program accrediting agencies.

Applicants for Admission are evaluated on the following:

  1. Admission to Lamar State College Port Arthur.
  2. Program specific entrance exam.
  3. Transcripts and grades in high school and previous college work.

Additional costs above tuition and fees are required in all Allied Health programs. Uniforms, background check, equipment and instruments, liability insurance, health examinations, drug screening, immunizations, CPR course, licensure/registration examination fees, and transportation to clinical facilities are the responsibility of the student. Financial aid is available for eligible students. Liability insurance, health examinations, and specified immunizations are required each year of the program. Students may be assigned to clinical experiences during day, evening, night and weekend hours. Clinical agencies may require additional health examinations, drug screening, vaccinations, dress codes or conformity with other policies. Students will be informed in advance of each requirement.
