Program Description
The Patient Care Technician Program prepares students to provide direct patient care under the guidance of nurses, physicians and other Healthcare professionals in a variety of healthcare settings, including long-term and acute care facilities. As a Certified Patient Care Technician, a student may perform some or all of the following tasks:
- Provide direct patient care to include hygiene and comfort measures, vital signs, and other activities of daily living
- Perform electrocardiograms (ECGs)
- Perform basic laboratory procedures
Outcomes
- Exhibit an understanding of the scope of practice for a Patient Care Technician
- Demonstrate the knowledge, skills and attitude to work collaboratively with members of the healthcare team to provide safe and competent patient care within their scope of practice
- Demonstrate the knowledge of the ethical, legal and professional principles for the role of the Patient Care Technician
- Demonstrate the ability to communicate with patients, families, and members of the healthcare team in a therapeutic and professional manner
Certificate in Patient Care Technician
To be considered for admission and participation in the Patient Care Technician program, the student should:
- Apply to and receive acceptance into Lamar State College Port Arthur. Our staff in Enrollment Services would love to assist you.
- Make an appointment with an Advisor to help guide you on selecting courses that can assist you in earning a Level 1 Certificate Completion for Patient Care Technician
- Complete a Criminal Background Check with Castlebranch
- Be able to pass a drug screening prior to the clinical experience
- Complete American Heart Association CPR for Healthcare Provider training course prior to beginning clinical. Information on classes will be provided within the program.
- Obtain and provide documentation of required immunizations per clinical affiliates requirements.
- Obtain and wear professional, program-approved clinical uniform
In addition to the above requirements, students desiring to pursue a career as a Patient Care Technician must have the Knowledge, Skills, and Attitude (KSA) needed to work in this field. This includes:
- Compassion for others
- Ability to employ skills learned in an actual patient care facility
- Willingness to learn and receive feedback to improve skills
- Willingness to work as part of the healthcare team
- Desire to make a difference in the lives of diverse patient populations
