The Substance Abuse Counseling Program provides instruction that prepares graduates to provide specialized counseling and treatment services to individuals and their families who are experiencing the effects of either substance or behavioral addictions.
Program courses meet the requirements for ‘Counselor Intern’ status of the Texas Health and Human Services (HHS). Students must complete a criminal background check by an agency specified by LSCPA prior to registering for the first practicum course (DAAC 1164 or DAAC 1165).
Graduates of the Associate of Applied Science Degree or the Advanced Technical Certificate are eligible to apply for Counselor Internship License and take the state licensure examination which leads to full licensure as a Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor after the completion of all other requirements mandated by Texas HHS.
The Advanced Technical Certificate (ATC) is designed for individuals who already have a bachelor’s degree or higher in a related field and desire specialized education and licensure as a Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor.
Courses in the program encourage the acquisition of the knowledge, skills, aptitudes and values that will enable graduates to succeed in the workforce.
